East Bay-San Rafael bus route will be scrapped due to few riders

Published Friday June 10

Golden Gate Transit bus service across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge that started late last year has turned out to be a half-million-dollar flop, and officials voted Thu to shut down the service in September.

The service — funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission — needed at least twenty riders a trip to make it sustainable. It is averaging 2 to 3 riders nontheless, despite $100,000 in extensive marketing, which included a billboard along Interstate 580 in the East Bay.

Transportation planners thought Route 580 could tap into that market and provide people in the East Bay who work in Marin an easier way to get into the county.
